Learn Thai in Phuket on a Student Visa
In Phuket you can learn Thai and live here on a student visa at the same time: the course and the visa come as one package. The price covers the course, school enrolment, the 13,000 ฿ immigration fee and every 90-day extension. Compared with the no-class package, the difference is 9,000 ฿ for six months, or 300 ฿ per group hour.
What you can learn in 30 hours
Thai is a tonal language: five tones, 44 consonant letters and its own script. 30 hours will not make you fluent, but an everyday level is realistic:
- greet people, introduce yourself, say where you are from and how long you have lived in Phuket;
- use numbers, understand market prices and bargain;
- tell a taxi or motorbike-taxi driver where to go;
- order food, ask for it not spicy, ask for the bill;
- understand simple questions in everyday conversation.
Over a year with 60-80 group hours, you add reading signs and menus, everyday conversation and confidence with tones.
Group or private
Group: more hours for the same money, plus conversation practice with other students. Good if you are not in a rush and enjoy learning with others.
Private: fewer hours, but the pace and topics are yours. Good if your schedule is unpredictable, you want to tackle something specific (talking to your landlord, say), or you would rather not speak in front of others.

Why Thai matters even if you did not come to study
Even if your main goal is simply to live in Phuket legally, lessons have practical value.
- Immigration. After the 2025-2026 audits, when about 10,000 student visas were revoked, immigration looks at whether students actually study. Real lessons make your extensions calmer.
- Repeat visas. If you plan to take a student visa a second or third time, a class package lowers the risk of awkward questions.
- Daily life. Market prices, your landlord, repair people, neighbours. Thais are noticeably warmer towards foreigners who try to speak their language.
- Training. In Muay Thai gyms, trainers often call combinations in Thai.
