Muay Thai Visa in Phuket: How to Train for Six Months or Longer
To train Muay Thai in Phuket for more than two months you need a long-term visa. There are three options: an education visa through a Muay Thai gym, a DTV under the soft-power category, or a student visa through a language school that lets you train at any gym you like. Here is how they differ, and how to choose without paying extra to be locked into one camp.

Why a visa exemption is not enough any more
On 15 September 2026, Thailand cut visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days. An extension gives another 30, two months in total. For a training camp that is short: eight weeks is roughly how long it takes to settle into two sessions a day.
Visa runs have also become riskier. In June 2026, immigration reported 29,490 foreigners refused entry, with visa-run patterns among the stated reasons. Someone flying out and back every 30 days fits that profile exactly.

Option 1. An ED visa through a Muay Thai gym
Some gyms are licensed to teach foreigners and can sponsor a Non-Immigrant ED visa as a sports school. You enrol on a Muay Thai course and the gym issues letters for immigration.
Pros: the visa is officially for Muay Thai, so immigration questions are straightforward.
Cons:
- you are tied to one gym for the whole visa. Do not like the trainer or the vibe? Switching without losing your visa is hard;
- the price includes training, so the package is usually noticeably more expensive than a standard ED visa;
- only some gyms hold a licence, and after the 2025-2026 audits (about 10,000 student visas revoked), those schools face more scrutiny;
- attendance is recorded, and missed sessions can come up at extension time.
Option 2. DTV under the soft-power category
The Destination Thailand Visa gives five years with up to 180 days per entry. One of its categories covers soft-power activities, including Muay Thai.
Requirements: proof of enrolment in a programme, a 10,000 ฿ government fee and 500,000 ฿ in the bank. For people here for a season on a modest budget, the savings requirement is usually the sticking point.

Option 3. A language-school student visa plus any gym
The most flexible option. Your visa comes through a language school, and you train wherever you want: switch gyms, try several, spend a month training in another province.
How it works with us:
- six months from 27,200 ฿, one year from 47,400 ฿, every extension included;
- no savings or income requirement;
- about a month to process, two visits;
- Thai lessons in a class package help in the gym too, where trainers often call combinations in Thai.
If you want to learn the language properly, there are packages with classes: 36,200 ฿ for six months with 30 group hours, 54,400 ฿ for a year. More in Thai language course in Phuket.
Options compared
| Gym ED visa | DTV | Language-school ED | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 6-12 months | 5 years, up to 180 days per entry | 6-12 months |
| Savings required | Usually none | 500,000 ฿ | None |
| Free to choose your gym | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Training + visa | 10,000 ฿ fee + programme | From 27,200 ฿ for the visa; gym paid separately |
Summary
To train Muay Thai in Phuket for more than two months, you need a long-term visa: visa-free entry now gives 30 days plus a 30-day extension. A gym visa is convenient but ties you to one place and costs more. The DTV needs 500,000 ฿ in the bank. A language-school student visa gives you the same six months or a year with no financial requirement, and leaves you free to pick your gym and trainer.
