The Non-O Visa in Thailand: Who It Is For and How to Get It
Non-Immigrant O is the category for people living in Thailand on family and personal grounds: retirees over 50, spouses of Thai citizens, parents of Thai children, guardians of children in school and family members of foreigners with a work permit. The visa is issued for 90 days and then extended by a year at a time. The hard part of a Non-O is the timing: the money has to sit in the bank for two to three months, and the visa exemption gives you 30 days. That gap is what we close with a student visa.

How to apply
From abroad. Through the thaievisa.go.th portal or the embassy where you live. You get a single-entry visa for 90 days, and the fee is around 2,000 baht.
Inside Thailand. You change status at immigration from a visa exemption or a tourist visa. Your stamp has to have at least 21 days left on it. You cannot move from one Non-O to another.
With a 30-day exemption there is almost no time for a change of status, so either collect your documents before you fly or arrange a student visa first.
The one-year extension
- The government fee is 1,900 baht.
- The money has to be in the bank in advance: two months before filing for retirement, two to three months for marriage.
- For a marriage extension your spouse comes with you, and immigration may inspect the home.
- After you file, you get an "under consideration" stamp, and the decision comes a few weeks later.
After that it is a TM.47 report every 90 days and a re-entry permit for every trip out.
Where people usually trip up
- The money is not seasoned. Putting 800,000 baht in the day before you file is useless: the bank issues a statement covering the whole required period.
- No income letter. Many embassies have stopped issuing income letters, and immigration asks instead for 12 months of transfers from abroad into a Thai account.
- Not enough days on the stamp. In 30 visa-free days you cannot open an account and season the money.

The student visa as a bridge to Non-O
The typical situation: someone arrives for a retirement or marriage visa, and the money is not seasoned yet, the marriage is new, or the papers are still travelling from home.
A student visa solves that in one visit to the school:
- 6 months of legal stay with no money requirement;
- from 27,200 ฿ with every extension included;
- it makes opening a bank account easier, and we arrange the residence certificate for 1,000 ฿.
In six months you open the account, season the amount and file for your Non-O without racing the clock. The full cost is in how much a student visa costs, and you can compare all four packages under prices.
Summary
A Non-O is the visa for retirees, spouses of Thai citizens, parents of Thai children and dependents. It is issued for 90 days, extended by a year for 1,900 baht, and the financial requirement runs from 400,000 to 800,000 baht in the bank. The hardest parts are seasoning the money and fitting it all into the days on your stamp, and that is where a student visa buys you six quiet months of preparation.
