Who qualifies
- The marriage is officially registered. An engagement or living together does not count.
- One spouse is a Thai citizen. Two foreigners do not qualify for this visa.
- Same-sex couples qualify with an officially registered marriage.
- A foreigner's children need a visa of their own.

The financial requirement
- 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account.
- An income of 40,000 baht a month. Income from abroad is confirmed by an embassy letter; income in Thailand by a work permit and three months of tax filings.
How long the money has to sit in the account:
| Stage | Period |
|---|---|
| Changing status inside the country | The last 3 months |
| First extension | From 2 months before filing |
| Every extension after that | The last 3 months |
One exception: where the husband is a Thai citizen and the wife is the foreigner, the 400,000 baht requirement does not apply.
Documents
- the marriage certificate - Kor Ror 2 and Kor Ror 3 if the marriage took place in Thailand;
- copies of your spouse's Thai ID and house book;
- a bank letter and an updated bank book;
- photographs of the couple inside and outside the home;
- a map to where you live;
- passport, photos, form TM.7 and the TM.30 receipt.
Your spouse comes to immigration with you.
How to apply
From abroad. An e-visa through thaievisa.go.th - a single-entry Non-O for 90 days.
Inside Thailand. A change of status from a visa exemption, a tourist visa or a Non-B. Your stamp needs at least 21 days left and your passport more than 18 months.
The one-year extension. Form TM.7, filed no earlier than 45 days before the end of the 90-day period, with a government fee of 1,900 baht. After that, every year.
Can you work
The visa itself does not give you the right to work, but you can apply for a work permit with it. Your employer has to meet the usual requirements on Thai staff and capital. The details are in work visa and work permit.

If the dates do not add up
The marriage was registered a month ago, the money has been in the account for less than three months, the papers are coming from another country - a 30-day visa exemption does not leave time for any of that.
The answer is a student visa:
- 6 months of legal stay with no money requirement;
- from 27,200 ฿ with every extension included;
- two visits and about a month to arrange.
While it runs, you season the dates and file for the marriage visa with a finished file. The packages and what is in them are under prices.
Summary
The marriage visa is issued to spouses of Thai citizens where the marriage is at least two months old and there is either 400,000 baht in the bank or an income of 40,000 baht a month. First a 90-day Non-O, then a one-year extension for 1,900 baht. The visa lets you apply for a work permit. If the marriage is new or the money is not seasoned, a student visa gives you the time to prepare without visa runs.
