Visa Run from Phuket in 2026: Rules, Routes and the Alternative
A visa run means leaving Thailand and coming back for a fresh stamp. Since 15 September 2026, each entry gives most nationalities 30 days instead of 60, only two visa-free land entries are allowed per year, and refusals at the border are becoming more common. If you live in Phuket for more than a couple of months, the visa run turns into the most expensive and most nerve-racking way to stay. A student visa gives you six months with no trips out, from 27,200 ฿.

Visa run and border run: the difference
- A border run is crossing a land border and coming back the same day, for example through Ranong into Myanmar.
- A visa run is any trip taken for a new stamp, usually a flight to a neighboring country for one to three days.
Thailand has not banned visa runs, but the rules tighten every year. Living on visa-free stamps no longer works as a plan.

The rules in 2026
- 30 days after every entry, plus one 30-day extension for 1,900 baht.
- Two visa-free land entries per calendar year - land borders and the sea ports next to them.
- Flights are not capped, but they are checked. The officer sees your whole entry history and decides whether to let you in.
- Refusals are rising. In June 2026 immigration reported 29,490 entry refusals. The main reasons: no money, no clear itinerary, signs of visa running.
- Money and a ticket. At the border they may ask for 20,000 baht per person and an onward ticket.
Routes from Phuket
| Route | How | Time | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranong to Kawthaung, Myanmar | Minivan to Ranong, boat across the strait | A full day, 4-5 hours each way | Counts toward the 2 land entries a year |
| Malaysia via Sadao | Bus or car | 8-9 hours each way | Counts toward the 2 land entries a year |
| Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore | Flight from Phuket airport | 1-2 days | No cap, but your history is checked |
| Vietnam, China and elsewhere | Flight | Several days | No cap, but your history is checked |

What six months of visa runs costs
On a 30-day exemption with the extension, you have to leave every 60 days: three trips in six months. Without the extension, six trips.
Every trip means tickets, a hotel, food on the road, 1,900 baht for the extension and one or two working days gone. And above all it means risk: one day they do not let you back in, and your apartment, your bike and your things are still in Phuket.
| Visa runs | Student visa with us | |
|---|---|---|
| Trips out in six months | 3-6 | None |
| Cost | Tickets, hotels, extensions - every time | 27,200 ฿ once, extensions included |
| Risk of refusal at the border | Grows with every entry | None |
| Money required | 20,000 ฿ at the border | None |
The full comparison of the costs is in how much a student visa costs, and the four packages are in prices.
When a visa run still makes sense
- You are flying off on holiday anyway and pick up a new stamp while you are at it.
- You need two or three months, not six.
- It is a one-off trip out to come back with a full set of days and arrange a long-term visa.
Summary
A visa run from Phuket is still possible, but since 15 September 2026 every trip out buys only 30 days plus 30 on an extension. By land it is no more than two entries a year; by air it is a growing number of refusals. For a short stay, a visa run will do. For six months or more on the island, a student visa is cheaper and safer.
