Thailand Visa for Russian Citizens in 2026: Every Option on One Page

For a trip of up to 30 days, Russian citizens need no visa for Thailand: they get a visa-exempt stamp at the border. A tourist visa suits a holiday of 2-3 months, and living here for six months or longer takes a long-term visa: student, retirement, marriage, DTV or Thailand Privilege. Below are all the options side by side, with requirements and costs as of October 2026.

Visa exemption: 30 days

Since 15 September 2026, Russian citizens can stay in Thailand without a visa for 30 days under the bilateral agreement. The former 60 days were cancelled. The stay can be extended once at immigration for 30 days for 1,900 ฿.

What you need at entry: a passport valid for at least 6 months, the TDAC digital arrival card (free at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival) and an onward ticket. The officer may ask you to show 20,000 ฿ per person. The rules in detail are in Thailand visa exemption.

Tourist visa (TR)

It gives 60 days in the country and can be extended at immigration for another 30. You apply in advance through the official e-visa portal thaievisa.go.th: application form, passport scan, photo, accommodation booking, tickets and a bank statement.

A TR works if you know you are coming for one season and no longer. For living here more than 3 months it is not enough.

Multiple-entry tourist visa (METV)

Valid for 6 months and allows many entries, 60 days each time. It suits people who often fly between Thailand and other Asian countries. The requirements are stricter than for a TR: you need to show steady funds in the bank.

Student visa (ED)

Processed through a licensed language school for 6 or 12 months, extended every 90 days. The main difference from the other long-term visas: no income or bank balance requirement.

With us in Phuket an ED visa costs from 27,200 ฿ for six months. The price includes the school, the 13,000 ฿ immigration fee and every extension. It takes about a month and two visits. More in ED visa price and ED visa requirements.

To process it after arrival, you need at least 15 days left on your stamp at the first immigration visit. With a 30-day exemption, that means starting in your first week.

Retirement visa

For people aged 50 and over. You need 800,000 ฿ in a Thai bank, or 65,000 ฿ monthly income, or a combination of both. It is renewed every year for 1,900 ฿.

Marriage visa

For spouses of Thai citizens. The marriage must be registered at least 2 months before you apply, plus 400,000 ฿ in the bank or at least 40,000 ฿ monthly income.

DTV

A five-year visa for remote workers, freelancers and participants in soft-power programmes such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking or medical treatment. The fee is 10,000 ฿, and you keep 500,000 ฿ in the bank. Each entry gives up to 180 days.

Thailand Privilege (formerly Elite)

A paid membership with a visa for 5-20 years. Since 30 September 2026 the cheapest tier, Bronze, is closed, and entry starts with Gold at 900,000 ฿ for five years.

How Russians apply for visas now

Almost every visa issued before the trip goes through the official portal thaievisa.go.th. Visa agencies in Moscow and other cities help fill in the form and collect documents, but the embassy makes the decision.

Long-term visas are more often processed in Thailand itself: a student, retirement or marriage visa can be done on the spot if there are enough days on your stamp. It is easier than collecting documents at home, and you do not fly with a risk of refusal.

Summary

For a short trip Russians need no visa: the exemption gives 30 days and can be extended for another 30. A tourist visa suits a season of 2-3 months, and a METV suits frequent trips. To live in Thailand for six months or more you need a long-term visa, and the choice depends on age, family situation and money in the bank. Without financial proof, the most accessible option is the student visa: from 27,200 ฿ for six months, processed on the spot in a month.
